Time for a Reset
Dear Prime Minister,
It’s time for a reset. As you take office, we ask you to pledge support for the rights and liberties at the centre of UK democracy and promise to protect those rights in a new age of technology.
Our Human Rights Act, Equality Act, and European Convention on Human Rights are quiet guardians of our everyday rights.
Together they ensure that we can speak freely, we won’t be discriminated against, and if we are failed by the authorities, they can be held to account.
We must protect them.
The rights that underpin our democracy are at risk. In the last decade, successive governments have introduced ever more restrictions on protest, and people feel that their ability to speak out about the issues they care about is more restricted than ever.
We are living in a time of rapid technological change, and people want to see safeguards in place as new technologies are rolled out by the police and the state.
Your government can lead the way and stand up for our right to speak out, choose rights-respecting technologies, and defend the freedoms we have fought so hard to win.
This is your opportunity to choose a different path: one that protects our hard-won rights and freedoms, and ensures that technological progress serves people, not power.
