HAVE THE RIGHT TO PROTEST

The Government’s latest attack on protesters – the Public Order Bill – faces crucial votes in Parliament before becoming law.

Email your MP today and demand they protect the right to protest.

Last month the House of Lords amended some of the Government’s worst proposals.

Now our elected MPs will vote on whether to keep or reverse these changes.

Proposed protest banning orders could stop you from going to particular places, meeting certain people and even using the internet in certain ways.

The original Bill allowed them to be issued even if you haven’t committed an offence.

The House of Lords changed this so they can only be used against people who have been convicted of protest-related offences and/or breaches of protest-related injunctions.

The original Bill also proposed expanding stop and search powers to enable police to stop and search people and vehicles for, and then confiscate, any items that could be used to commit a protest offence – even if they do not have reasonable grounds to suspect criminal activity.

The House of Lords changed this so police must reasonably suspect that a protest-related offence will take place before they can stop and search protesters.

These changes aren’t perfect, but they are considerable victories we must now protect. We need to make sure that it’s the least bad version of this Bill that becomes law. Then we can work to scrap it altogether.

Email your MP to protect these victories and stand up for protest rights.
